Widespread availability of network access and networked information systems has created a high demand for new generation multi-protocol aware information browsing and presentation tools. In order to support eecient programming and operation for such tools, new networking languages will need to be employed. This study attempts to identify requirements for these networking languages and their environments, based on their operational embedding in global networks. Furtheron, we compare four languages, Perl, Tcl, Java, and Obliq, qualitatively to those requirements as well as quantitatively to each other. These comparisons are based on test programs in three important networking language domains, networking, computation, and user interfaces.
